The Catholic Monarchs ordered the site of 'Casabermexa' to be settled with sixty families, a founding that received its official charter on 26 June 1550; in 1633 its residents bought their jurisdiction from the Crown to avoid falling under noble lordship, becoming one of the district's first independent royal (realengo) towns.
