La Carolina was founded by colonists in 1767 as capital of the New Settlements (Nuevas Poblaciones) of Sierra Morena and Andalusia, under the direction of Pablo de Olavide; the main works were completed around 1770. Among the colonists were notable transhumant families from other parts of Spain, such as the Herranz family of Bronchales.
