Its founding inscription dates it to the year 968, during the caliphate of Al-Hakam II, though recent excavations place the current structure between the late 11th and early 12th centuries; it was declared a monumento histórico-artístico (the heritage protection category used between 1931 and 1985) by decree of 3 June 1931.
