Aldeaquemada was founded in 1768 as part of the Enlightenment project to colonise Sierra Morena promoted by Carlos III, on the depopulated Dehesa de Aldeaquemada, property of the ducal house of Benavides. The aim was to settle and secure the Despeñaperros pass with Central European colonists.
