Alquife
Village

Minas de hierro de Alquife
Historical milestone
Worked since the 19th century, the Scottish Bairds Mining Company acquired the concessions in 1895; after the handover to the Compañía Andaluza de Minas in 1929 and peak production between 1940 and 1970, the mines closed between 1996 and 2021, when they reopened due to high steel prices. They form the largest open-pit iron mine in Europe, with an underground lake up to 130 meters deep.
Castillo de Alquife
Monument
Muslim military fortress built between the 11th and 15th centuries on the hill above the village, pentagonal in plan with seven towers; it was the largest castle in the former territory of El Zenete.
El lago de las minas de Alquife
Nature
The open-pit excavation of the old iron mines of Alquife has become, through the accumulation of groundwater, an artificial lake around 130 metres deep.
