The conquest of Alhama by the armies of the Catholic Monarchs on 28 February 1482 triggered the War of Granada. During the subsequent Nasrid siege of 1484-1485, the governor Íñigo López de Mendoza y Quiñones ordered the use of paper money to sustain the defense of the stronghold.
