Tradition holds that Fernando de Válor y Córdoba, Abén Humeya, self-proclaimed king of the Moriscos in the 1568 rebellion, was born in the municipality. Every 14 September a Moors and Christians festival is performed in his honor, with a 19th-century script attributed to the Granadan poet Enriqueta Lozano.
