The colonization project of La Carlota, founded in 1767 under Charles III, took place between 1767 and 1769; its execution was entrusted to the adventurer Johann Kaspar von Thürriegel, who brought to Spain nearly 6,000 German and Flemish Catholic settlers, of whom around 1,600 settled in the town, leaving a trace in surnames and Central European features.
