Rute is famed for its anís liqueurs: in the first third of the 20th century it had more than sixty distilleries, of which several survive today, among them Machaquito, founded in 1876. It is also a land of mantecados (crumbly shortbread) and ham, the latter already mentioned by Cervantes in the 16th century.
