The ancient Ucubi, after supporting Julius Caesar at the battle of Munda, received the honorific title Claritas Julia. After the Muslim conquest it was renamed Al-calá, and in 1303 Ferdinand IV granted resettlement privileges and the change of name to Espejo, derived from the Latin 'Specula' (fortress, watchtower).
