Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, 'the Great Captain', was born in 1453 in Montilla castle. In 1508 Ferdinand the Catholic ordered the fortress demolished as punishment for the rebellion of the 1st Marquis of Priego; it is said that the King of France pleaded for clemency on learning that the birthplace of so celebrated a soldier was being destroyed.
