Martín Alfonso de Córdoba founded the castle of Montemayor in 1340 by royal charter, giving rise to a family branch that held the lordship for six generations until 1521; his son Alfonso Fernández de Montemayor rose to become chief frontier commander (adelantado mayor) of Andalusia.
