The old town of Arcos, with its castle and the churches of Santa María de la Asunción (14th-15th c.) and San Pedro (15th-17th c.), was declared a monumento histórico-artístico (Monumento Histórico-Artístico, Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1962, a category later converted into Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
