What to see and do in Algodonales

Algodonales
Village
Algodonales is a municipality in the Sierra de Cádiz at the northern entrance to the Grazalema natural park, on the flank of the Sierra de Líjar, between the Guadalete and Guadalporcún rivers, and is part of the Route of the Pueblos Blancos. It has 5,425 inhabitants and lives from agriculture and rural tourism. Its earliest settlements, Neolithic, were found at Cueva Santa, Chamusquina and Castillejo, alongside Iberian fortifications on the Cerro de la Botinera. The town was resettled by the Ponce de León family, dukes of Arcos, from 1520 onwards, with settlers from Zahara; in 1566 it received a papal bull to build its church. French troops burned the town on 2 May 1810, causing numerous deaths; in 1817 Ferdinand VII granted it the title of villa, making it independent from Zahara de la Sierra.
Church of Santa Ana (Algodonales)
Monument
The church of Santa Ana stands on the Plaza de la Constitución, in the centre of Algodonales (Cádiz); it is a Baroque temple from 1784, the work of the architect José Álvarez, rebuilt after the fire started by Napoleonic troops on the site of an earlier parish church. Its doorways, main and lateral, are later, the work of the master builder José Durán following designs by Antonio de Figueroa y Ruiz. It has a hall-church plan with three naves, a transept and a flat east end; the main façade, with a large chancel arch and triangular pediment, houses a niche with the sculptural group of Santa Ana and the Virgin as a child. The bell tower, rebuilt between 1790 and 1798 by José Echamorro after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, ends in a two-tier spire. Inside, the neoclassical altarpiece of the main chapel and a working organ stand out.
