The historic centre, with the Torre de Guzmán (14th-15th centuries) and the Arco de la Villa, was declared Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1983, a category that automatically became Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1985 with the entry into force of Law 16/1985.
