Founded in 1964 by Joseph McMicking, Sotogrande was born with the first golf course built in the area, the work of Robert Trent Jones; its nearby Valderrama course hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, and the Santa María Polo Club has organized one of the world's most prestigious polo tournaments for more than fifty years. Its marina opened in 1987.
