Conferencia de Algeciras Historical milestone · Algeciras, Campo de Gibraltar, Cádiz The Algeciras International Conference was held in this city of Cádiz between 16 January and 7 April 1906, with the aim of resolving the First Moroccan Crisis that set France and Germany against each other over the colonial division of Morocco. Tangier and Madrid were considered as venues, but Algeciras was chosen for its position equidistant between the two and because it already had a rail link with Europe and the Reina Cristina hotel, then rated the best and most expensive in Spain. The sessions, held in the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall, brought together ambassadors from thirteen nations, including Germany, France, Spain, Morocco, the United Kingdom, the United States and Russia. The resulting agreement gave its name to the so-called Act of Algeciras. 1906 Photo: Unknown author (Public domain) What to see and do in Algeciras
