Castle of San Romualdo Monument · San Fernando, Bahía de Cádiz, Cádiz Castillo de San Romualdo, formerly known as Logar or Lugar de la Puente, Castillo de Suazo and, in Arab times, Alquería de Rayhana, is a ribat - a building of Islamic origin used as a fortress and place of worship - located in San Fernando (Cádiz), next to the Zuazo bridge. Due to its characteristics it is unique in all of Spain; its construction probably predates the 13th century, although doubts remain about the exact date and reason for its building. The present-day city of San Fernando, formerly known as Isla de León, grew up around the old ribat and the Real Carenero, next to the Zuazo bridge. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931 and is today a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) with monument status.
