Church of San Juan Bautista (Chiclana) Monument · Chiclana de la Frontera, Bahía de Cádiz, Cádiz The parish church of San Juan Bautista, in Chiclana de la Frontera, is an 18th-century neoclassical church, built from 1776 by the architect Torcuato Cayón de la Vega, a key figure in the transition from baroque to neoclassicism in Cádiz; on his death in 1783 the works were continued by his pupil Torcuato Benjumeda, who likewise did not see them finished before dying in 1836. An earlier church stood on the same site, begun around 1510 and demolished due to its ruinous state, of which a bas-relief of the Descent from the Cross from the mid-16th century is preserved. During the French occupation (1810-1812) the building served as barracks and an artillery depot. It was consecrated, still provisionally, in 1814, and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1975; in 2013 emergency intervention was needed due to the risk of collapse of the pediment. construcción s.
